Are you a UNH faculty member (lecturer, tenure or non-tenure track, research, clinical – all are welcome!) interested in developing and implementing programming that brings a liberal arts perspective to sustainability?
Then apply for one of our Liberal Arts and Sustainability Faculty Grants! We offer support in two areas: course development and co-curricular programming.
Learn more at www.sustainableunh.unh.edu/casrfp.
Course Development Awards (due October 1)
We are offering three course development awards of $3K each for courses offered in the 2013-14 academic year. Each awardee will receive $2K in course development funding during AY12-13, followed by $1K in implementation funding during the semester in which the course is offered.
This is an opportunity for faculty in COLA to help highlight the Humanities’ contributions to sustainability and to benefit from increased exchange with our colleagues in the natural, social and health sciences, as well as in engineering. We are conceiving of “sustainability” in the broadest possible terms, covering topics such as:
- Sustainability of cultures (e.g., cultural heritage management);
- Cultures of sustainability (e.g., institutional and cultural changes that will promote sustainability);
- Critical reflection on the term “sustainability” itself
- Environmental history, art and literature
- Studies of space and place
- Social and economic justice
- Diversity
Past course topics funded include “Sustaining Ancient Rome: The Ecological Costs of Empire”; “Race, Gender and Environmental Justice”; “The Global Sex Industry: Exploring Transnational Feminism, Ecocriticism and Sex Worker Rights.”
Submit a syllabus and a one-page proposal by October 1 at www.sustainableunh.unh.edu/courserfp. The proposal should explain how the course advances the discussion of the relationship between the liberal arts and sustainability, and indicate how you plan to use the course development funds. Awardees will be notified by November 1. Recipients will be required to participate in Sustainability Academy faculty development efforts, the specifics of which will detailed upon award announcement.
Co-Curricular Programming Funds (rolling deadline)
Proposals should communicate the actual and/or potential relationships between the liberal arts and sustainability, e.g.:
- Sustainability of cultures (e.g., cultural heritage management);
- Cultures of sustainability (e.g., institutional and cultural changes that will promote sustainability);
- Critical reflection on the term “sustainability” itself
Programming may include guest speakers, artists and/or activists, special events, or field trips organized around any of the above themes. Past projects funded include the 2011 Indigenous New England TRADITIONAL ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE?PAST – PRESENT – FUTURE Conference co-sponsored by the UNH Center for Humanities and Sustainable Stories (www.sustainu.org), showcasing English 622: Advanced Newswriting student work on sustainability in the Seacoast region.
Faculty members may submit proposals as individuals or groups, and may involve staff and students. Interdisciplinary proposals involving collaboration between departments and offices that help to expand the scope and impact of the proposed program will be given special consideration.
- Proposals of no more than one page should include:
- Names and contact information for all faculty, staff, and students involved in planning, including identification of faculty leads.
- Names and affiliations of proposed participants and speakers.
- Description of program format and schedule, discussion of desired impacts, and explanation of how the program will enhance the contribution of the liberal arts to sustainability.
- A proposed budget, including all in-kind items.
Awards of up to $1,000 will be available beginning September 15. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis. Awardees must use the Sustainability Academy name, logo and URL (www.sustainableunh.unh.edu) in all online, print and other promotional materials as a co-sponsor of the programming. To apply, visit www.sustainableunh.unh.edu/cocurricularrfp.
