Learning about sustainability through the example of UNH

Copenhagen: 17 days and Counting

November 20th, 2009 · No Comments

The world’s leaders are assembling in 17 days for what will hopefully be the turning point in global action to mitigate climate change. President Obama has been overseas this past week working with President Hu to help build support going into the conference in Copenhagen, including agreement upon collaboration of the EPA to help China develop a more accurate GHG monitoring system.

My International Environmental Politics (NR 720) class is using Copenhagen as a learning model. After my colleagues and I each chose a country to represent a few weeks ago, we each researched our country extensively to create an exhaustive country profile. So which country did I choose? The United States. Let’s just say that I like a challenge. In addition, we each recently wrote proposals (5-7 pages) for the negotiations in Copenhagen from the perspective of our countries. Over the next four class periods the 20+ of us will experience the challenges in creating an international agreement on the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. I promise to keep you all informed of how our negotiations go.

This is a really exciting (and nerve-wracking) time for international action on climate change, so stay tuned and keep an eye on the headlines. In the meantime…

You stay sustainable UNH!
